Bread forms part of the daily diet in many countries around the world. The following project ideas encourage children to explore bread in its’ many forms, through origin, history and application.
- Explore the journey of wheat grain from source to loaf. Research where grain is grown, how it is transported, and the various processes it goes through before/after flour production. Look at a simple experiment with yeast, warm water and sugar in a bottle, and a balloon over the top. This will demonstrate the action of yeast in bread. A simple bread making session will also demonstrate this.

Find out what kinds of flours are used in bread making- rye, wholemeal, granary and white etc. From naan to bagel, from ciabatta to bap, there are many different types of bread made the world over. How are these breads incorporated into the daily diet in other countries, are they just a snack, or do they form an essential part of a meal?
