How It All Began

At Brace’s, baking great products runs in the family, quite literally. Since 1902, when the company was first established by George Brace, people have trusted our family to feed theirs. Now in its fourth generation, it is Mark Brace (Managing Director) and brother Jonathan (Director), who oversee operations.

Colin Brace OBE

Colin went to Monmouth School where he excelled at sport, especially rugby. In 1940, he joined the army as a gunnery instructor for the Royal Artillery. After the war, he qualified at Cardiff Bakery College and continued into the family business with his father, Ernest. After the death of his father in 1974, Colin took full control of the business. Five years later, he bought the Croespenmaen site, creating a new bakery that is the foundation for the business today. He worked tirelessly over the course of his career to make sure the business continued. Colin attended work at the bakery everyday before he sadly passed away aged 96 in February 2018. The bakery was his whole life.

Mark Brace

Mark joined the family business in 1974, doing everything from delivering bread to sweeping the floors. Having gained an HND Business qualification, he joined the board in 1986 and now runs both the financial and commercial side of the business. He is a great railway enthusiast.

JonAthan Brace

Jonathan joined the company in 1984 after finishing Bakery College, and joined the board in 1986. Thanks to his creative flair, he has been instrumental in the design of the bakeries and the products we produce, taking care of and overseeing all packaging designs. Jonathan loves all things motorsport.

Today

We’ve been baking at Croespenmaen since 1979, the site continuing to grow from 8,000 sqft to 60,000 sqft, with our most modern equipment. In 2004, we ran out of room, opening a second bakery located a mile up the road at Pen Y Fan, dedicated solely to sliced bread and is now our head office. The bakeries are situated on top of the valley above the town of Blackwood in Gwent, a stone’s throw from where George Brace started Brace’s in Pontllanfraith.

Distribution

Locally made, our distribution area covers South Wales and the Southwest of England. Delivered through our dedicated distribution fleet, direct from the bakeries and also our depots in Caple Hende near Ammonford and Dursley in Gloucestershire, we deliver to over 3,000 stores daily.

At Brace’s, we are committed to:
